Puppets
I have always enjoyed puppet making and puppeteering. As a child and teenager, I belonged to several puppet and acting groups. With the release of Fraggle Rock on DVD, I remembered how much I had enjoyed this growing up and am playing with a few puppet designs in my spare time. After attempting a little research, it seems that most puppet-oriented sites haven't been updated for 6-10 years. Hopefully I can fill in the gap a little with some updated info.
I plan to build several puppets and post construction details here. I plan to start with a carved doughnut puppet, followed by a snowman. After that, money allowing, I plan to tackle a bunny puppet, and perhaps a Fraggle or two.
My Dad gave me several plans from his days of puppeteering. They are a little rough - not a lot of instruction, just unmarked patterns. I have them scanned and posted here. You will need to stitch some of the pictures together and print them out. Email me a picture if you use them, I'd love to see. There is a basic person design, a worm, and a really neat cow that can be made with this basic puppet pattern. I'll try to get pictures of the originals. He made them 25ish years ago and they still hold up well.
Free Puppet Patterns
I have the basics of the 'Duncan the Doughnut' puppet here. This is probably as much detail as I will get to for a while.
Snowflake the Snowman is started. here are unprocessed photos. I won't have patterns or pictures of the skin covering, yet, as I have run out of money for the time being (I'm on a shoestring budget right now and use found materials).
I've also started in the bunny puppet. Here are some photos of the model I made for the head.
Supplies
I am considering opening a small web store that would carry the hard-to-find puppet items. I would definitely carry the Antron Fleece replacement and Reticulated Polyfoam and sell it in small quantities (usually you have to buy huge amounts if you can find it at all). Please contact me if you would be interested. Please also let me know of any other items that would be of interest.
Here's a small listing of supply resources:
- Free Puppet Scripts - These folks have almost 1000 free puppet scripts. If nothing else, a great place to get some inspiration.
- A more complete resource - I have found a lot of links to be dead on this site, but it still has some good suggestions. I do a google search for any companies with dead links.
- Silpon Designs - Ok, it's not a resource, but if you find my stuff useful, perhaps you could patronize my business? The more I make on my business, the more time and money I'll have to spend on puppet designs to share.
